| ROH Review 20 June 2009 Classy start with a tribute of Mitsuharu Misawa, dedicating the show to him. A little spoiler I caught the other day is announced... ...Austin Aries has become the new (and first ever) 2 time ROH World Champion. Straight into the action... Matches in spoiler tag's to save room... Match 1. Claudio Castagnoli vs. The Necro Butcher. - Spoiler:
Quick recap of the Embassy/ Grizzley Redwood beatdown of last week which Necro made the save for.
Handshake to start it off. Necro looking a little cautious with his fist ready as he shake's Castagnoli's hand. *Fuck em up Necro* chant's, alway's a pleasure to hear lol. Claudio hit's a takedown 1st, play's abit to the crowd, he's 'very European'! Very good psycology from the Swiss wrestler. He was one guy I had tipped for a World Title run a while ago, not happened yet, but he has all the potentail to be a big star in the business.
He takes Necro down again, but Necro this time showing that he isn't just a light tube swinging psyco and actually does some mat wrestling, and y'all thought I was joking when I said he out wrestled Austin Aries at Proving Ground lol.
Claudio again showing great psycology by offering his hand again, but this time cutting The Necro Butcher off with a swift kick, and a Very European uppercut. Necro hit's a monkey flip on Castagnoli and showing some good crowd interaction before going at Claudio with a boot of his own. Necro hit's a back drop, looked a little messy, but then again Claudio is a little taller... Necro sending Claudio to the floor with a cklothesline following up the back drop. Setting himself up for a roll from the apron? Possible Necrocuranna? No, Claudio get's out of the way. Claudio play's up to the crowd as Necro hit's him from behind and send's him to a table across the other end of the ring. Send's Castagnoli reeling from a take down using a shirt or towel or something around his head?
Back in the ring, Claudio cut's Necro off as he make's his way back in. Suplex attempt over the rope's, Necro counter's, tries his own, countered by Castagnoli who again tries for his own, manages to get Necro over but is again stopped as Necro goes over and land's on his feet, grab's Claudio's waist, but he hold's onto the rope's sending Necro backward's rolling under his own momentum.
Thumb to Necro's eye followed by a big boot, Pin attempt for the 2. Elbow and another pin attempt, 2 count. Uppercut's and a scoop slam, and another elbow pin combo, and another 2 count. An attempt aqt another scoop is cut off and Necro again goes for that roll from the rope's, and this time get's him down for a 2 count.
Off the rope's goes Necro and run's through Claduio's clothesline, hit's a big fist, then off the rope's with a boot to the face. Claudio selling it really well, looking shook up. In the corner, chop's and punches and into a bull dog. 2 count for Necro. Chokeslam attempt, cut off and send's Necro into the corner, misses with a folow up running elbow, which Necro also misses and Claudio connect's with a boot, goes to the 2nd rope but is cut off by a right hand, Necro goes up and pull's off a top rope Necrocuranna.
Jimmy Rave down to the ring, spit's some thign at Necro and drop's down, Necro in pursuit. Rave lead's Necro back into the ring, and distract's the ref and Double C hit's a low blow on Necro, for the 3!
Good opening bout. 3.5/5 star's. Had great ring work from both Necro and Claudio, good crowd interaction, good psycology, and not to mention getting a good kicked off. After the match Claudio (an associate of The Embassy?) and Rave beat down The Necro Butcher. Brent Albright in for the save, Chases both men off, Claudio and Rave playing up to the camera and crowd on their way out, with charisma like that WWE should snap this guy up sharpish. USA chant's to Castagnoli, as Brent help's up Necro in the ring. Recap of last week where Austin Aries beat's down Jerry Lynn. Nevaeh (who?) hyping up her match... Match 2. Non title. Nevaeh vs. SHIMMER Champion Ms Chif w/ Jimmy Jacobs. - Spoiler:
Hand shake start's off the bout. Quick action to start with Neveah getting the upper hand. A botched arm drag turned into a nice show of agility from the new girl to ROH, Neveah. Alot of head hold's, with the occasional snap mare, the usual... Expecting a squash match from Ms Chif.
Ms Chif with double feet top the back of Neveah, with her face in the bottom turnbuckle.
Quick AOTF thought's... Jimmy Jacobs as a manger, he's not really done much so far, and The Age Of The Fall is pretty quiet at the mo, begining to think it's just wasted talent recently, seriously, AOTF started out as good as a stble can, stringing up a top midcard face, going onto feuding with one of the TOP faces in Austin Aries, gaining a decent talent in Joey Mathews (nee. Mercury) before losing him through shit contract issues or something, a good addition in Zack Gowen which went the same way, then getting Necro over when he left, then Tyler Black when he left, then Delirious left, now it's just Jacobs, a couple of chick's and this poor man's Necro in Brodie Lee (seriously not a fan lol). Jacobs is looking more like a pimp than a revolutionary leader.
Back to the match... Botched roll up from Neveah... 2 count... Ms Chif contorting Neveah's leg acorss her back while stood up, wrenching her neck back, into a feeble gut buster. Missed lionsault. Neveah back on attack with a few elbow's and drop kick's Face to the knee and into a neck breaker or a 2 count.
Ms Chif goes for the Desicrater, countered into a Bridging German Suplex from Neveah for a 2 count. Jacobs on the apron distracting the ref and Neveah. Green mist time methink's... Jacobs classy move in spitting in Neveah's face.Green mist to Neveah's face, into the Desicrater for the 3 count.
2/5 star, a few botches and Neveah looked green (even before the mist) and Jacobs' stable playing babysitter for the chick's these day's. Pro Wrestling NOAH's Kenta makes his ROH HDNet debut. Any Puro fan's will recognise him, as will ROH fan's as he has performed at a few ROH event's in the past. Also the inovator of the GTS, not CM Punk. Also another Ric Flair appearance (thought WWE said NO TV appearances? Does this not count?)... Colt Cobanna and Brent Albright in a new Cobanna segment, The Art Of Pro Wrestling. A new OFFICIAL show (They gave them little microphone's lol, Brent's taped to his chest...) at the merch table. Very good on the mic, and he is very over with the fan's as any body who has seen a Colt Cobanna match on ROH, make's me wonder why they didn't give him a segment on WWE before they did, a week or so before they released him, best way to get some one over is to use them for what they are best at, in his case, talking. Huge potential, WWE just wanted him to be WWE made, which included shedding his Cobanna persona, fair enough, but a total turn around in character? Very Questionable... Ric Flair segment, pretty much what you'd expect, talking up ROH, etc... Ah, Rhettski the Jetski haha. Love that gimmick. He play's it so well lol. Rhett Titus passes his hotel room key card to a chick who accompanied him and Kenny King to the ring. This match is Kenny King vs. Kenny Omega. Two former team mate's. Recap of the 3 way match four week's back. Kenny Omega, bland character, though is pretty decent, just too generic for me, nothing to make him stand out, and he just got on my nerves with his lame Street Fighter thing, bull shit... Kenny King on the other hand, very good heel, draw's alot of what I call arogant heat. - Spoiler:
Decent back and forth wrestling to start it out, a nice looking step over from Omega though, he is good but I dont see him going far, he just look's so green, and with mannerism's copied from a lame game, it just dont do him any favour's, in a few year's he might have what it take's to shed that and go on to do something worth while. It's good that ROH is willing to put him on TV too, I wouldn't lol.
Enziguirey (sp?) send's King over the rope's. Omega sizing the stuation up, run's to the rope, bouncing between the two side's and going for a baseball slide but comes up short. King hit's a few kick's and Rhett Titus grab's Omega, butterflying his arm's for an open shot for King. King jump's to the apron and cannon ball's off, Omega get's out of the way and King land's on Addicted To Love, Rhett Titus.
Back in the ring goes Omega, setting up another dive or something. Over the top rope and onto both member's of the YRR. Crowd going crazy, yes very impressive swanton type dive. *ROH, ROH, ROH!* Omega send's King back into the ring. Whips king over to the corner, follow's up with a back elbow type move. Snap mare into a basement drop kick. 2 count. The crowd getting on Rhett a little bit, he has brilliant heel chemistry with the crowd, Rhettski is going far imo, with a gimmick like this anyway, play's it how it should be played.
Thumb to the eye. King follow's up with an attempt at some break sdancing style kicking, caught by Omega into a spinning kick of his own.goes off the rope's but Rhett Titus grab's his leg's causing him to trip. King with a leg drop to the back of the neck. 2 count for King.
A few cheaky punches of Titus. Plain view of the ref too? Omega trying for a comeback, whip's Kingb into the corner and goes to follow it up but King crotches him on the top rope. Then pull's off a sweet rolloing kick, look's like that Rolling Thunder of Kofi Kingston. Very nice. Super Plex attempt on Omega, throw's King off, into a backward sommersault landing on his feet, Omega into a cross body. Rhett Titus doing a great job outside getting the crowd going and cheering on Kenny King.
Omega throwing a few double hand's at King. Does a nice cruiser type move, off the rope's and around King back to the rope's he had just come off, confusing King, into a low dropkick, that was very nice I have to admit, you dont see that stuff every day. Omega jump's King's body and into a bulldog for another 2 count.
Neck Breaker for another 2. King off the rope's and Omega does taht STOP! thing where the other wrestler stop's and just look's at him, good for novelty I supose but I never bought into that, and neither dis King, as he counter's into another break kick. And a big clothesline take's Omega's head off. drop kick type Knee's to Omega sending him into the corner, 2 count before Omega grab's the bottom rope.
Omega take's the offensive after countering a running with some kind of back flip, looked nice. King in the corner now as Omea run's at him, and is sent over the top again, this time landing on the apron. hit's a back elbow. As the ref is checking on King, Omega goes up top, and Titus grab's his leg while King run's up and hit's a knee. King hit's the Coronation (a Death Valley Driver into a Rock Bottom type move) for a 2 count. Crowd going nut's. King get's Omega up on his shoulder's but is countered into a roll up on King for a 2, countered again for another 2.
King give's Omega a quick slap before some trash talking. Nice agility from Omega ducking a kick. They do the whole STOP! thing again, and as King goes to grab his hand, Omega pull's off an enzuiguri (again sp? lol). Omega 'hulking up' grab's a full nelson on King, but is countered and Omega goes to the rope's where Rhett grab's his arm's, butterflying them again (why has he not been DQd? Lol). Omega wriggles free as King run's and connect's with Titus, sending him to the gaurd rail. Omega hit's a backward type hurricaranna to King, which was pretty good. Omega with the Electric Chair German Suplex (look's a dodgy move that, one of those move's you know is going to kill him or some one...) for the 3...
Rhett Titus in for a beat down, Erick Stevens in for the save. That was impressive, really good bout, 3.5/5 star, every one was great, Rhett did a great job hyping on Kenny King, King and Omega both looked amazing, both can go far but I feel Omega just need's more time to grow into his own.

| Next week an ROH tag title match the Wolves vs. American Dragon and Tyler black. Eddie Kingston and Chris Hero recap. Where Kingston got DQd. Eddie Kingston vs some jobber, Andy 'Right Leg' Ridge. - Spoiler:
This has SQUASH written all over it.
"Eddies Gonna Kill You!" chant's haha. Kingston making sure he isn't getting DQd again this week lol. Right Leg from, Right Leg lol, followed by a right fist by Eddie Kingston. Over head release suplex, looked nice. Just throwing this jobber around. A few stiff kick's and knee's from Ridge connecting with Kingston's head. No affect though. Back fist knock's Andy Ridge out for the 3 count.
Total squash, nothing else, just a 'warm up' till he get's to Chris Hero haha. Jimmy Jacobs/ Delirious video package. Next week there will be a Fight Without Honor, so they haven't just dropped AOTF, should be a good match, knowing their past. Jimmy Jacobs interview... He even state's that Necro has beaten the shit out of him, Delirious spiking him, and Tyler Black smoking him up and down the country, where has all their momentum gone? Jacobs is AOTF, his character and his whole demenour fit's with what AOTF is, he's come a long way from the whiney bitch making the love song that saved his job. He say's how he's free, how he has a cage match with Black, and the match next week with Delirious, and that his and their destiny's lye together, etc... Not bad a promo, seen better from Jacobs though. Main Event. Roderick Strong vs. KENTA. - Spoiler:
Code of Honor follwed as both men shake hand's. Counter's gallore to kick it off, Kenta getting the upper hand though, looking like a real seasoned pro. A leg sleeper type move on Strong which he flip's out of. A very nice compettive feel to this match too, which is lacking in most wrestling amtches these day's, you could turn yourself off and just watch this thinking it was 100% real, two great athletes, one a top star of a foriegn organisation, the other a great up and comer. A couple of nice spot's, 1st a rope break, slow to come apart, with Strong attempting a chop that Kenta get's away from, the next is the same with Kenta going for a kick which Strong get's away from. Nothing flash just adding to the feel I was talking about, one upping each other.
Kenta hit's a kick, which Strong retaliate's with a chop, Kenta agin with a kick, and Strong again with a chop, back anbd forth they go... Blow for blow, as Kenta hit's a series of kick's and Strong hit's a nice drop kick. Kenta gets the advantage with a series of elbow's, he cut's off a sunset flip from Strong a run up for kick from Kenta, looked nasty.
A series of kick's to Strong in the corner ryling him up. Kenta come's running at him, Strong cut's him off and throw's him half way across the ring. Strong in control now. A series of chop's from Strong lead to a bitch slap from Kenta, as Strong retaliates with some more chop's, and a series of stomp's. Back breaker from Strong, 2 count. Sweet drop kick on Kenta, sounded painfull too. Back and forth, both looking strong, countering each other etc. Powerslam on Strong from Kenta.
Strong working the back again. Lead's to a 2 count. Again both men going at each other, Kenta coming out on top, he springboard's out and back into the ring and scores with a drop kick. Yakuza kick to Strong, followed by a stalling drop kick. Sit down powerbomb and a 2 count. A series of strike's from Kenta putting CM Punk to shame, followed by a front drop kick. 2 count. GTS attempt on Strong, couldn't get him up, another attempt, again countered. Strong in control places Kenta up top for a super plex and hit's it for a 2 count.
Strong going for his Strong Hold, Kenta get's to the rope's, both men on the apron, Strong goin for a back drop, countered by Kenta who knock's Strong down, and hit's a running kick. Kenta drop's down to the floor. Kenta come's running, but is caught by Strong who throw's him to the apron back first getting a quite big reaction from the crowd.
Back in the ring for a 2 count. Strong hit's the gut buster and follow's it up with a kick for good measure. 2 count again. Strong butterfly's Kenta's arm's for the Gibson driver, Kenta counter's getting Strong into posstion for the GTS and hit's the best GTS ive seen since Punk broke Snitsky's snout lol. Cover for the 3. Very good HDNet debut for Kenta, good outing for Roderick Strong too. Handshake to finish.
4.5/5 Almost a perfect exibition match. For those unfamiliar with Kenta, watch this match it wont dissapoint. Had a real competitive feel to it, no history or anything going into the match but still for pure wrestling, fantastic. Good show too, topped off with possibly the best HDNet match so far? Thought's? Discuss the show folk's, also the big news going into the show, Austin Aries the NEW (and only) 2 time ROH World Champion. That should be a good matchm, I haven't watched the McGuiness/ Lynn match where Lynn get's the title yet, but Im looking forward to a nice Aries run with the belt. | |
