A subscription-based 'Call of Duty' title is looking more and more likely.
When asked about the company's upcoming plans for the series during its financial call this afternoon, President and CEO of Activision Publishing Mike Griffith re-confirmed the series will see a new title every year, and said new business models are being looked at.

"Our strategy continues to be to annualize our key franchises. We've indicated before that Call of Duty is on a two year development cycle given the content and work that needs to go into a high-quality game experience," said Griffith.
"We also have new business models potentially for the franchise in the future and we've been building capabilities on both the business development side as well as the studio side of it. We remain committed to annualize the Call of Duty franchise."
President and CEO of Activision Bobby Kotick also hinted at where the company wants to take Call of Duty going forward.
"If you think about the success that we've had in other product categories on subscription, you can get a sense of the direction that we want to take that franchise," he said.
Last November, Activision Blizzard CFO Thomas Tippl stated during the BMO Capital Markets Conference in New York City the company plans to test and launch new online business models for its top franchises.

There’s been a fair bit of discussion lately regarding the pros and cons of charging people to play the online content of a game. The main focus of these discussions always seems to fall on Activision, Bobby Kotick and the Call of Duty franchise – mainly due to various comments Kotick has made in the past.
Well, an interesting thread has started up over at 360 Junkies where a poster has claimed the following;
“I was trying to join a friend’s session on MW2 the other day and had this screen pop up. It clearly says at the top of this menu: “Modern Warfare 2 Membersh”, in which we can confidently assume that the last word is “Memberships”. If you’ll notice at the bottom is an option to “Add Microsoft Points”, clearly indicating that this was intended to be a menu for purchasing different levels of Membership, presumably memberships would have been offered in a variety of durations.”
By the sounds of it the guy has been met with a mixed reception so he has uploaded the following video to back up his claim;
Now I’ll be the first to admit, I’m certainly no Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 fan – but I’ve done a bit of digging to see if this ‘membership’ could just be something related to an in game item, but it doesn’t seem to be. Of course, this video could very well have been doctored so I’m wearing my big fat rumour hat until I’m told otherwise.
UPDATE: Infinity Ward’s Robert Bowling has said the following via Twitter;
”Modern Warfare 2 subscription plan rumors going around. For the record, nobody has to pay to play COD or MW2 multiplayer, nor will they.”
The YouTube video is being called a glitch where the screen has gotton stuck between the Modern Warfare 2 screen and the Xbox Live renewal service.

I can see people signing up to this (if it goes ahead) but it's pushing it really, you've already paid for Xbox Live membership and the game itself and now you have to pay an in game membership on top of that? Seems like a lot of money for a hobby (which is what gaming is).

that would bomb on xbox cos they would have paid already for online and i doubt ps3 gamers (bar horizon types) would be fucked about it they would just not bother
but if it came up on mw2 then its obv not real, because its not a subscription game lol.

It might not be a subscription game just now, but they could plan on adding a subscription to the game, I believe they only have to give a months notice if that is the case. The rumours of this becoming the way the CoD series was going to go was believed to be one of the reasons the 2 main guys from Infinity Ward left.

I dunno, there's a lot of people who are beyond obsesive with CoD, for some it's the only game they play. I could definitely see those people being willing to pay the subscription just so they could keep playing.

There are a lot of people on my friends list who play this game and nothing else, unless they buy a new game, they play that for a week or two, and then go back to CoD.
The fact that Cod 4 was still £40 2 years after it's release, right up until MW2 was released, shows you how popular it is.

I hope this rumour is bull even though I don't own a PS3 or Xbox360 because i'm not a big fan of this "charge for extra stuff" and "subscribe to play online" crap as it's a way to get more money out of you and whats more if everyone did this (apparently PS3 are planning and Xbox live service themselves) then we will see death to atcual video game shops like GAME and gamestation, we will see death to the second hand games market, we will be charged for stupid stuff that should be in the game anyway, we will be charged to play online which at the moment for some you can play for free (Motorstorm on PSP is brill and so is Mario Kart Wii online).

If this subscription does take place, I think i'll be hoping on a bus to go to a mates house to play Call of Duty. It's enough that I have to pay for on line (I have a 360) so if this does come around I won't be paying.
