WWE 2k15 STORY, CAREER MODES, AND MORE REVEALED – IGN FIRST

WWE games more dense and feature complete, and from the first details we've gotten on WWE 2K15, that trend is going to continue. Let’s take a broad overview of just what you can expect from this year's outing in the squared circle – both on last-gen and current gen – starting with the new story mode, 2K Showcase.

Last year, WWE 2K14 electrified with its sprawling campaign mode, 30 Years of Wrestlemania. 2K15 is looking to tell a more focused, up-close-and-personal story than the broad historic view offered in 2K14. 2K Showcase will be broken up into two episodes, each one focusing in tightly on an epic rivalry from the WWE’s past. Think of them as mini-documentaries of a sort. Could it be Rock vs Austin? Undertaker vs Kane? 2K hasn't spilled the beans just yet, but rest assured we'll be the first to know, and when we do, so will you. If the excellent 30 Years of Wrestlemania was any indication, though, the authenticity of the presentation will make these rivalries a treat to play through.

In addition to reliving these golden WWE memories, you'll finally have a true, discreet career mode for your created wrestlers in MyCareer. This mode has been lifted from NBA 2K14 and adapted to the WWE environment. While I didn't think the mode had the right synergy with the NBA, the WWE seems like a logical place to apply it. Imagine replacing all those cheese-ball, amateur hour characters and cutscenes with authentically voiced and mo-capped WWE Superstars. You get the picture. Exact details of the mode are still forthcoming, but we do know that it will be on the current-gen version only. Sorry, 360/PS3 stalwarts.

No matter what version you play, though, you'll get to enjoy the fruits of Visual Concepts' involvement. Over 50 days worth of motion capture sessions went on at 2K's state-of-the-art mo-cap facility, where WWE Superstars spent hours getting their signature moves digitally recreated. All told, WWE 2K15 features five times (FIVE TIMES! FIVE TIMES!) the animation data of 2K14. Thankfully, just as much effort has gone into improving the way the game sounds, the color commentary in particular. Over four times as many lines were recorded this time around, which should go a long way towards spicing up what has consistently been one of the franchise's presentational low points.

I've played NBA2K14, and the career mode is a beast. It's not fun to play, especially if you don't have a clue about basketball.

Do you start off as a rookie then work your way up kinda deal in nba2k14? Because that would be kinda good in wwe2k15 providing you don't wrestle one match and then bam you're main eventing RAW.

You have to create your character, and then play in a showcase game. How well you do in that defines how good a team signs you - obviously, I was utter shite, and got drafted at no 27. The better you do, the better teams want to sign you. After that, you play as a sub until you get good enough to be a starter, but you only when your player is on the court, if that makes sense. I don't think that will translate to a WWE game at all, but I can see that you'd start as a rookie on NXT, then get drafted and work your way through. The ultimate goal of the NBA career mode to being voted into the Hall of Fame, which the quickest you can do is in a season and a half. You have certain goals to achieve in your career (total number of points, assists, rebounds, and other stuff). The problem I had with it was the amount of games you had to play to achieve it. A full season is 82 games, plus play-offs... it was roughly 100 matches to complete a season...

Ah right, well it looks like it has some re-playability but if you've never watched the sport before half the time you don't know what's happening. If the WWE career mode is like that then it will probably be half decent.

Agree with Grec, I just usually pick the generic white guy and change the hair to suit mine and the height.

I just make the same guy on every game, last year i couldn't be arsed so just used the Orton template and changed his gear.

The release date has been put back to November 21 on next-gen consoles. Still 28 October on PS3 and Xbox 360.

Just need to beast FIFA till it comes out.

A press release from 2K indicates that the mode is called "MyCareer Mode" and will let players experience the life of a WWE superstar from NXT rookie to WWE Hall of Famer.

Players will be able to create characters train at the WWE Performance Center and compete at NXT where they will face fellow up and comers.

After completing goals on that level, they will finally get a chance to join the main roster where they will build alliances and rivalries en route to ultimately becoming a WWE World Champion.

The press release also mentions that every action a player makes will "lead to multiple branching storylines, surprises, twists and turns." In addition to the game's replay value, gamers can earn chances to upgrade their skills, earn new clothing and even unlock managers.

Greg Thomas, President at Visual Concepts said that the mode is a "perfect fit" for the wrestling game and can't wait to unleash the NBA 2K-inspired mode.

“MyCareer is a mode beloved by our NBA 2K fans and is a perfect fit for WWE 2K15,” Thomas said. “We are eager to deliver a comprehensive career mode experience for the first time and consider its inclusion a critical step forward for the franchise.”

That sounds exactly like what these games have been missing. I enjoyed the historical WM approach in the last one, but If you create a CAW the options have always been limited. For those who say they never bother making a good CAW, you now have a reason to put a bit of creativity into one, as they can actually progress in an interesting way.

The career mode in NBA is pretty good. If this is done well, it could be great.

you could argue that it should work better in WWE games than in legit sports games. Maybe not first time out, but the possibilities to improve on the idea are endless. Where there is a limit to what an NBA star can say and do, there is almost nothing a wrestler can't do in a storyline.

2K has attempted to bring a narrative to MyCAREER, with consistent plot points throughout your path, again tinged with that seen from Visual Concept’s NBA ventures. You can only play MyCAREER as a created wrestler, the reason being is that you start in the amateurs, working on the mats with WWE Trainer Bill DeMott before appearing on NXT, the WWE’s programme for up and comers. This part of the game acts as a tutorial, and we got to spend some time learning the basics of the new mechanics (while experiencing some of DeMott’s ‘tough love’, which equates to endless verbal abuse hurled from ringside).

It’s a nice way to not only get to grips with the game but also the basic flow of matches, especially with the new chain wrestling mechanic, a basic rock-paper-scissors encounter designed to replicate the early part of a match where wrestlers engage in tie-ups and minor punches and slams before expanding to some more significant moves.

The only issue with integrating the tutorial into the career is it can risk outstaying its welcome. I know that, with the full game, I’ll be looking to create a Rey Mysterio character and a Big Show-esque behemoth, and am not looking forward to playing through the enforced tutorial sections twice over. Hopefully this part of the career isn’t too long.

As you gain notoriety, you’ll begin to gain a social media fanbase and interact with other wrestlers. How you choose to interact with others determines whether you are face or heel, but this can change throughout. You will also become involved in storylines which will create cutscenes pre and post-matches, as well as affect the type of bouts you’re involved in. Following a one-on-one victory, Daniel Bryan came storming to the ring, but not before climbing the turnbuckle to engage the crowd in his iconic “YES! YES! YES!” chant.

In turn he then stood in front of me, and I had the choice to either shake Bryan’s hand or slap him in the face (you can guess which one is the good guy move) ahead of our contest at the next PPV. I went with the respectful handshake, though I didn’t expect the too-close-for-comfort staredown which followed.

Bryan then tweeted me about his upcoming match, a ‘warm-up’ for our title fight which saw him take on a top contender. Again, I was offered the choice of response: the good response was to be the hero, and say my next match would be a handicap fight against a tag team, while the heel move was to face off against WWE fodder. I’m a little rusty, so took the easy option, beating Xavier Woods to a pulp.
The flow of matches feels great in WWE 2K15. I got the chance to play as both a high-flyer and a dominant big man (both were created wrestlers), each playing entirely different. The big guy lumbered around the ring like a giant smelling the blood of an Englishman, landing kicks to the face and dragging opponents to their feet with brute force. The Lucha Libre-clad wrestler, meanwhile, bounced off the ropes and flew around to the point where I often forgot where I was going.

Countering moves is still very tricky, but that’s a good thing: you want to feel like you earned that drastic swing of momentum, turned a corner and got your opponent on the backfoot after taking a battering for five minutes. Being rewarded for putting on an entertaining show for the crowd often means you’ve been in a better fight. Rather than breeze through matches to get to the title, you’re more likely to spend time in each match and vary up your moves, as better performances means greater Virtual Currency rewards, which can be used to unlock even more moves or training camps with legendary wrestlers.

Unlike NBA 2K15, all VC is unlocked in-game and cannot be purchased with microtransactions, meaning players can’t buy themselves a Hall of Famer.

MyCAREER certainly adds depth to the series, and with the new 2K Showcase allowing you to follow the storylines of some of the greatest rivalries in WWE history (including a personal favourite of Shawn Michaels vs Triple H), there’s certainly a lot to dive into.

It certainly feels like the ageing old-gen has been pushed aside to give the PS4 and Xbox One version the limelight, and you can’t help but get excited, if in spite of some of the issues of the past carrying over.

I like how they're pushing NXT. I'd love to see an NXT match at Mania next year, sticking the 'Big 5' from the indies - PAC, Zayn, Kenta, Devitt and Steen into a 5 way match.

WWE Superstars and Divas' attires change like the wind. Because of that, it's difficult for a development team to keep up. One fan asked if the Shield members (Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose) would have their new attires.
They responded: "Ambrose and Rollins will not have their new attires, but you can create alternate ones for them in our Creation Suite." 
This might not appeal to some fans, but if you love creating and flexibility with character specifics, you'll appreciate the opportunity to make alternate attires.
Not only does this give you the opportunity to keep up with WWE programming, it also lets you come up with attires that don't even exist.

During the Q&A, we learned that the MyCareer mode in WWE 2K15 can span 15 years. The developers said: "MyCareer can span up to roughly 15 years—especially if you play through as both a fan favorite or rule breaker!"
The MyCareer model in NBA 2K15 takes a player from a rookie to a veteran. The WWE 2K version will do the same thing
