Subject: Bret Hart on ECW in 1997! Tue Sep 08, 2009 5:31 pm
OK so how many of you knew that? Just reading about it myself and can't believe I managed to miss something that would be so epic and can't believe during a time when ratings where everything Vince didn't try and get this shown on RAW

On September 11th, 1997 the stars of three wrestling promotions, Extreme Championship Wrestling, Frontier Martial Arts Wrestling, and the World Wrestling Federation gathered in Amarillo, Texas, to honour one of the true legends of the wrestling business, Terry Funk, as he announced his retirement. To commemorate this event, Funk challenged Bret “Hitman” Hart for the WWF title in the main event of Wrestlefest: 50 Years of Funk, also known as Terry Funk‘s Wrestlefest. Commentary duties are handled by none other than the voice of ECW, Joey styles.

Main event time, with Terry Funk challenging Bret Hart for the WWF title in a no DQ match. This is a match I’ve been wanting to see for years, and it didn’t disappoint

I think parts of this are on beyond the mat. I'd imagine as Vince didn't put his weight behind that once it was released it might be why it never aired. Could be wrong tho.

Yea some parts are on beyond the mat, what I mean is though I'm surprised Vince let such a match be done on anything other than WWF television even if it meant some cross brand Monday Night RAW from the ECW arena one night

Yea, thats why I thought such a scenario could have been played, since ECW 'invaded' RAW then the WWF could have went over to ECW

I'm a little confused. This wasn't an ECW event was it? It was just an independent show that commenerated Funk's career and retirement that just happened to include ECW wrestlers and Bret Hart. Was the match actually shown as part of an ECW TV show or did it just have Joey Styles doing commentary? If it's the latter then it's a bit of a stretch to say that Bret was on ECW.
That said, it was still in those days unusual for any WWF star, let alone the Champion, to be present at any other wrestling event.
And I imagine the only reason VInce could have for not showing such a match would be that the production quality wasn't upto the high WWF standards.

It was apart of Wrestlefest for Terry Funks retirement, however it was done after an ECW event and was shown on ECW a short while later thus "Bret appearing on ECW"

Ah I see, then I stand corrected. In that case I'm surprised they didn't make more of it on WWF TV, like you said earlier with a sort of 'WWF invades ECW' type thing. Something like that would have been good for both companies I imagine and would have been far better than the 2001 'Invasion'.
