Sony know about the PSN authentication issues (they announced some downtime earlier today) so hopefully they’ll be fixed soon for anyone that feels the need to do their PSNing from a browser – you’ll just get a maintenance message if you try.

“We’re aware that PSN Web Authentication and Account Registration are currently unavailable,” said Sony Community guy MusterBuster. “We’re working to resolve the issue.”

PS3-based sign-ins (and PSP) are unaffected, so you can still play online as before on your console.

The other news? Atari have tweeted that they don’t think the Store will be ready for Tuesday. “This just in…,” says the message. “Looks like Playstation Network is not gonna be ready for Daggerdale release on 5/31. Stay tuned for more details today.”

Sony confirmed on their PlayStation forums that they would be doing maintenance work on the PlayStation Network between 7pm UK time on May 31 and 1am the next morning.
The maintenance will prevent anybody logging into the system during those hours - but players who are already signed in will be able to continue playing unaffected (well, that's the plan, anyway.)
The maintenance suggests that Sony are planning to use the downtime to restore the PlayStation Store - something that seems likely, given that Sony had given May 31 as the only confirmed date by which they pledged to have fully restored their online services. Sony also said earlier this week that they hoped to have the Store back up and running by the end of the month.
In other news, Sony boss Howard Stringer has admitted that he didn't know the PlayStation Network was also successfully hacked into in 2008 - but denied that Sony had been complacent in its approach to online security. He managed to make this claim at the same time as saying that Sony didn't think there was much chance anybody would try to hack into the network.
'We have a network that gave people services free. It didn't seem like the likeliest place for an attack,' he said.

“In addition, you will not be able to sign in to PlayStation Network from eu.playstation.com. If you wish to play online during the maintenance, please ensure you sign in to PSN before 16:30 on Wednesday 1 June 2011.”

The PS Store Is Back

but no welcome back package there yet and the store is VERY glitchy

Sony have said the Welcome Back package is in the last stages of testing and will be available 'very soon'. The story isn't work great because of the amount of people accessing it.

The Welcome Back package is now available to all users. I went for infamous and little big planet for my 2 games. The 3 free movies are all terrible though compared to other countries.

I'm going for Dead Nation, and probably InFamous. Apparently, you can also sign up to Playstation Plus for a month, and get Burnout Paradise for free too.

Yeah you do get free PS+ for a month and can get burnout, but you can only play it while your a ps+ subscriber.

Or, at least, that’s what it looks like.

Gaze longingly at the bundle box for Resistance 3 – found here – seems that way, doesn’t it? We’re assuming this is some kind of ‘pass’ system similar to those around, but possibly for use on more than one game.

“Network features only available in countries that have Playstation Store,” says the big blue box, which at least confirms that whatever it is will require access to the PSN Store.

We must stress that we have no idea what this actually is. Hopefully we’ll find out soon.
