Speculation on when the PlayStation Network would come back online has run rampant in the two weeks since Sony took it down, and Sony hasn’t been terribly forthcoming about the state of repairs or re-engineering, and certainly not around when players can expect to use it again.

According to a previous statement posted to the Sony PSN blog on April 30th, they initially expected to “have some services up and running within a week from yesterday,” which would indicate a return to service as soon as tomorrow. Other statements however, said that some PSN services would be available as recently as last Tuesday, May 3rd, especially for PlayStation Plus members.

Clearly that hasn’t happened, and Sony hasn’t gone out of its way to confirm or deny that tomorrow, PlayStation owners will be able to play again. The company hasn’t indicated at all when SOE customers will be able to sign in to their favorite MMOs again. Sony’s silence on the matter, not to mention the conflicting speculation on when PSN will be back online, can’t be good for the company, or the gamers who desperately just want to go back to their favorite pastime.

We’ve already discussed some of the impact for Sony should PSN continue to remain offline, and we’re already seeing some of that fallout: Hulu Plus members are getting a week’s free service because of the PSN debacle, and if the outage continues, Hulu may be forced to extend that credit. Sony hasn’t stopped furiously marketing SOCOM 4 to gamers, even though online multiplayer is all but absent without PSN.

Also, in the early stages of the outage, Sony said that when PSN came back online, it would be “rebuilt from scratch.” It’s pretty difficult to believe that Sony could completely tear down and re-engineer PSN from the ground up using enhanced security techniques and new technologies in just under two weeks. Now, new information has come out that the server that hosted PSN were running an outdated version of Apache and wasn’t even protected by a firewall. Still, Sony’s previous statement that some services may be online as soon as tomorrow stands, and Sony hasn’t backed off of either statement.

Technology issues aside, Sony may be doing the most damage to its brand and its reputation with gamers just by failing to communicate effectively. It makes sense that they would want to be careful with their words while they work with law enforcement to find the people responsible for the attack.

Even so, it would make more sense to keep players more in the know than out in the cold. Most players are already angry and frustrated. Some are even ready to jump ship to the Xbox 360 and Xbox Live and cancel their SOE game subscriptions. More are willing to stick it out as long as there’s light at the end of the tunnel. Sony just has to provide that light before they give up and move on.

This could mean the service will be down for at least another week and may not be available until Sunday May 15th.

Sony is offering customers a range of freebies in an attempt to make up for the personal data loss and concern over credit card fraud, including a free month of PlayStation Plus.
Sony also announced that in the US, customers would be given free access to an identity theft protection service called AllClearID, which includes monitoring of whether your personal details have appeared online, and a $1million ID theft insurance policy.

A report from Reuters yesterday claimed that hackers had posted the user details of some 2,500 Sony sweepstake contestants, but that the company had later got them removed.

The data wasn’t from the current PlayStation Network but was connected to the “continued attacks of Sony,” said a Sony spokesperson. The user info, which didn’t include credit cards or passwords, was from an “out of date” website which was also compromised in the attacks.

Sony say they have removed the published information from the internet.

The PlayStation Network remains down, despite Sony claiming it would be up “within a week” back on the 30th of April – gamers, developers and publishers eagerly await the ability to play games (and, in the case of those currently unable to sell their games on the Store, make some money).

Sony may be offering a reward to anyone that can assist with finding the hackers.

Rockstar has issued a blog post on their customer support website to let PlayStation 3 owners know that the latest firmware, version 3.61, is apparently causing “overheating” and “red light” issues.

“We have received some reports of PS3s overheating while playing L.A. Noire or beeping three times before shutting down/turning themselves off, mostly on older 60GB and 80GB fat models,” says the publisher.

“Primary reports seem to be that updating to firmware 3.61 will cause PlayStations to overheat.”

This isn’t limited to just Rockstar games, or indeed even L.A. Noire specifically. “There have been various reports of this on a few different games now,” says the blog, “all reporting their PS3s turning off or ‘Red Lighting’ after having installed 3.61.”

“This can range from games randomly freezing to PS3s turning off anywhere between 30 mins use to 2 hours. We have confirmed locally that multiple games (Rockstar and non-Rockstar) overheat or freeze only when 3.61 is installed. ”

Rockstar say they recommend contact Sony directly to report any issues, but confirm that they are “continuing to test L.A. Noire on all firmware versions.”

Apparently, a loose plan has been set in the memo - obtained by Gamasutra - as to when the backlog of games, add-on content and so on will be released onto the PS Store, which could involve two updates a week for two weeks until Sony catches up.

From May 24th, the first update would see content from April 26th being released onto the store, followed by content originally meant for May 3rd emerging on May 27th, three days later. Content will then follow on May 31st and June 3rd, which should then see Sony finally getting back on track to a single store update per week.

"We thank you for your patience as we work to resume service of the PlayStation Store," wrote PSN Content Manager Jack Osorno in the memo.

Some DLC will be moved around "on a case by case basis", according to Osorno, depending on urgency, so expansion packs already released on other platforms uch as Fallout: New Vegas' Honest Hearts, could jump the queue.

"If there are concerns, we are willing to consider adjusting the release date of your content on this schedule," said Osorno. "Adjustments will be made on a case by case basis."

And naturally, with the PS Store coming back online, users will finally be able to claim their 'Welcome Back' appreciation package and hopefully enjoy the PSN as normal. Fingers crossed it all runs smoothly.
