This game is to celebrate Sonic 20th Anniversary and features levels from past Sonic games that have been redesigned and played using 2 Sonics (Classic Sonic and Modern Sonic) across 3 eras (Classic era, Dreamcast era, Modern era).
There is two versions of this, a console version (PS3, Xbox 360) and 3DS version and both will have diffrent levels except for Green Hill Zone.

I bought the SEGA megadrive collection for 360 afew months ago because it had all the old Sonics on it, surprisingly they still hold up pretty well(unlike golden axe).
Just thought I'd share that with you, dunno why.

I agree with you Bazz on both as I used to have Megadrive Collection on the PSP and the Sonic games are still good even today, but Golden Axe hasn't aged well (not even 3), so they should have replaced them with Streets of Rage or Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles instead.
BTW sega have also announced a new 3DS exclusive Shinobi game... but it looks crap and was most probabbly designed for the old DS until they thought “lets join the 2.5D craze like Street Fight 4, the new Mortal Kombat, Donkey Kong on the Wii, etc...”

Streets of rage 1,2,3 and Sonic 3/ Sonic and Knuckles are on the one for the 360. Unfortunately Streets of rage doesn't really hold up well either, not as bad a Golden axe, but not far off.

I'm really looking forward to this as you get to play as Megadrive sonic in 2D gameplay with a 3D style and only the Sonic moves from the old megadrive games aswell as modern Sonic in 3D Sonic Colours style with the new moves (However the 3DS version will feature 2D modern sonic in gameplay similar to Sonic Rush instead).
It features levels from past Sonic games, but so far all thats confirmed it Emerald Hill from Sonic 2 with Sonic 2's Casino Night zone being a 3DS exclusive.
Also screen shots have revealed the last boss from Sonic 3 (one with the spikes and big arm) is back.
I can't wait for this and I have a list of classic levels I want them to bring back, so here goes: Sonic 1 Scrap Brain Zone Sonic 2 Chemical Plant Zone Sonic 3 Ice Cap Zone Sonic and Knuckles Sandopolis Zone
You said Sonic too much times and it hurt my brain and i got lost.

updates
With the exception of Green Hill zone from Sonic 1, all the levels in the Xbox360/PS3 version will be exclusive to the consoles and all the 3DS levels will be exclusive to the handheld. ie; Console versions get Chemical Plant zone from Sonic 2 which won't be on the 3DS, but 3DS version gets Mushroom Hill from Sonic and Knuckles which won't be on the console versions.
On the console versions the levels will be 2.5D gameplay for classic, 3D gameplay for modern (ie; Sonic heroes style).
The 3DS version will have 2.5D gameplay for both classic and modern (modern levels will play like Sonic Rush) and act 1 will be classic sonic, act 2 will be modern sonic, but bosses and bonus stage will have 3D gameplay.
PSvita version has been rumoured, but not yet confirmed... however if it does get confirmed it'll be intresting to see if it's port of the 3DS version or the Console versions?
The 3DS version will use Street pass and have a 2 player mode that won't be in the console version.
also announced are Spanoia Zone from Sonic Unleashed and Seaside Hill from Sonic Heroes for the console version and an exclusive unlockable bonus stage on the 3DS based on the Sonic Heroes/Sonic 2 Half Pipe bonus stage.

Mushroom Hill zone from Sonic and Knuckles (3ds exclusive) - https://youtu.be/r5Tr2WTOsXQ
Chemical Plant from Sonic 2 and City Escape from Sonic Adventure 2 (console exclusives) - https://youtu.be/o0mkldsSMPw
On both versions act 1 is classic and act 2 is modern regardless of the level, ie; Chemical Plant zone act 1 is an exact replica of the Sonic 2 layout and act 2 is a Sonic Adventure like 3D version (act 2 on 3ds will be Sonic Rush style).

Thats because Sonic Generations contains levels from previous Sonic the hedgehog games which have been updated or remixed, which means in order to explain where the announced level is from, you have to say the games title which funny enough, every single one of them contains the word Sonic in, so basically expect more update posts that contain the word Sonic alot such as this:
If you pre-order the console version of Sonic Generations you get a DLC bonus based on Sonic 2's Casino Night Zone (the level itself is a 3DS exclusive).

It's now been announced that Emerald Coast level from Sonic Adventure on the Dreamcast will be a 3DS exclusive level and the one screen shot for it shows the Whale chase part and seriously if you saw it, you wouldn't believe that it was on a handheld.

...and as a recap, here is the full playthrough of City Escape Act 2 (Modern Sonic): https://youtu.be/9VlTucTyN8U
As you can see Modern Sonic (Act 2) is similar to the Sonic Adventure 2 original whilst Classic Sonic (Act 1) is like a Megadrive version of that level. The same applies to other levels:
ie; Chemical Plant Act 1 (Classic Sonic) is like the Sonic 2 level from the Megadrive, where as Act 2 (Modern Sonic) is like a Sonic Unleashed version of Chemical Plant
Hope thats cleared the confusion up.

That song is so true and i'm guessing you posted that after discovering the storyline for this game which i've yet to post as it's so stupid, you'd think i've made it up, but for those who have not been on the links in the first post and seen it yet, here is an intro to the Sonic Generations storyline:
Sonic is celebrating his 20th birthday (i'm sure he's older) with his friends by having a picnic (it's like a Yogi bear) and then a mysterious force (see the boss list above for his name) sends Sonic and his friends back in time where he meets his past self (the small, chubby, Megadrive Sonic with black pupils instead of green) and they notice the world is losing colour (epic mickey anyone), so the two Sonics race through his past to bring colour back and also rescue his friends (that somehow got sent back in time too).
...Yeah I agree with the song

I agree with you Fergie as Sonic doesn't work well in the 'behind view' 3D style and thats why i'm glad the 3DS version is all 2D side scroller.
The console versions however will just have Act 1 in 2D sidescrolling style with Act 2 mixing it with 3D bits.
BTW Fergie if you hate the 3D style, don't look at what they have done for Chemical Plant zone Act 2 (modern)

It's that 2.5D shit thats all the rage these days, but they are a few 3D viewpoints sections on the 3DS, but it's still played in 2D (ie; behind view rail bit in act 2 of Mushroom Hill, but it's just 1 rail, so works in 2D)... it's hard to explain, but see Act 2 of the 3DS version of Green Hill and Mushroom Hill.
