Fabio Capello has hinted that David Beckham's England future could depend on securing a permanent move to AC Milan.
Beckham is currently on loan at the San Siro from LA Galaxy and, although he is due to return to the MLS side on 9th March, is keen to remain in Italy.
Milan have already seen one bid for the former England captain rejected by Galaxy, but discussions between the two clubs and Beckham's representatives are expected to continue.
And Capello, who insisted that the former Manchester United and Real Madrid midfielder must decide where his future lies, reiterated his stance that he will not select players who are not ready for the rigours of international football.
Strong test
The Italian told Sky Sports News: "I choose the players in the best form, and now Beckham is here.
"Last year in February Beckham was not in the squad because he did not play. Now he is playing he is here, because he is a good player. Only for this reason, not for sympathy.
"David Beckham must choose. Campionato (Serie A) is a very strong test for him. The US League is not the same, the level is different."
Capello was speaking ahead of Wednesday's friendly international against Spain, a match in which Beckham could win his 108th cap for the national team to equal Bobby Moore's record for an outfield player.

The England boss believes the meeting with the Euro 2008 champions will provide his side with a crucial test of their abilities as they chase World Cup qualification.
He added: "I think it will be a very interesting game for me because we are playing against the European champions. We won against the vice-champions, Germany.
"The style of the two teams is completely different. The style of Spain is to have a lot of possession of the ball and technically they are fantastic players.
"I think it is one of the best midfields in the world. For this reason we will have to play in midfield very well with a lot of pressure and good positioning."
