Sony Boss Says Paying For Online Multiplayer On PS4 Helped Reduce Cost Of Console

On PS4 online multiplayer is now integrated into PlayStation Plus. That means that – for most games – if you want to play against others over the internet you’ll need to be a Plus subscriber. Plus is excellent value though, and most gamers didn’t really have too much to complain about when it was revealed during last week’s pre-E3 conference.
“First of all,” says Gara, “we wanted to introduce the console at a healthy price-point compared with PS3,” and that was apparently “front and centre in our thinking and our planning for years.”
Charging for online, or at least bundling it within Plus, will mean that the service can more realistically approach the levels that Xbox Live does. Gara says that PSN will mirror “the social features you’ve seen demonstrated on more of a world-class network” and has seen Sony “investing in a higher performance network” that will offer “better performance and reliability”.
PlayStation Plus currently costs around £40 a year.
Gara also confirmed what a couple of press releases have mentioned recently: that cross game chat – the ability to talk with other players online who aren’t playing the same game as you, or are in different teams – is definitely in as part of the PS4′s network. “It’s there,” he says.

Playstation PLus is awesome, if they keep the same deal of getting a load of free games each month.

yeah i loved that deal when i had it havent had time to get a new subscription atm any new games added?

Unchartted 3, Xcom (which is awesome), Kingdoms of Amalur, Little Big Planet Karting are all on at the moment, along with the usual PSN releases...

If it is kept at that price then it will easilly trump Xbox/live, I'd think. Plus, if Sony are getting money coming in more regularly, it can focus even more on destroying Microsoft.

Its rumored to be £46 for the year. Live is going to be £32.98 for a year.

I got plus this month for uncharted and ray man for the vita. Well worth it.

if you get even one game via Plus on ps4 then it's worth it. Not sure what Xbox really offers to compete.

Well right now they are offering Fable 3 for free, then again, not sure if it will carry on into Xbox One. Will have to wait and see.

Every 2 months there going to be offering 2 games for free, Think next month its Assassins Creed 2 and Halo 3 or 4

Going onto PS+ in July is Battlefield 3, Saints Row The Third (which is great!) and Payday: The Heist, along with stuff like Uncharted 3.

still worth £40 of anyone's money for a year.

Think they're the better choices then what Xbox has to offer to be honest, those games only came out 1-2 years ago. Battlefield 3 has hours of re-playability with all the weapons available. I've seen and heard that Payday: The Heist is really good.
