PlayStation Network Temporarily Shut After Attack

Sony has confirmed on the official PlayStation Blog that it turned off the PlayStation Network (PSN) and Qriocity services on Wednesday 20 April after there had been an "external intrusion" which affected the services. The company says it needs to have the systems offline while it is conducting an investigation. As of writing, the systems are still unavailable. Early reports from Sony suggested a DDoS attack was in progress, but those messages have since been removed.

Suspicion had initially fallen upon Anonymous who had previously launched attacks upon Sony as part of "Operation Sony" (Opsony), a payback attack for Sony's legal action against George Hotz (Geohot) – since settled – and Alexander Egorenkov (Graf Chokolo). But, a statement on Anonymous' news service says "For once we didn't do it", though it doesn't rule out the possibility other members of Anonymous could have taken action. It says that it thinks "a more likely explanation" is that Sony are covering up an internal problem with the company servers.

According to a further posting from Sony on Sunday 24 April, the systems are still suspended and the company is "working around the clock to bring them both back online". The delay is due, now, to Sony "rebuilding out system to further strengthen our network infrastructure".

They don't give a shit about their customers, apparently it took them over 24 hours to release an updated statement explaining.

I reckon it is anymous who are behind it due to Sony taking legal action on a hacker.

Yeah and the first thing they said was because of the japan earthquake then and day or 2 later they told everyone they where hacked

It's hard to see there faces fullstop as they always wear them Guy Fauke masks in videos and public apperances.

They are self-proclaimed internet terrorists from 4chan who are noted for hacking, thats why I said i'm not messing with them because if they can hack the likes of Sony, Ebay, Amazon, etc... then my Wii internet with crappy Opera browser should be easy for them.

I doubt you are running a multi billion dollar business from your wii though.

They have been known to hack people who get on the wrong side of them (ie; Jesse Slaughter after she slagged of 4chan on youtube) and lets be honest here, hackers need no excuse to do what they do.

BTW Annoymus are denying they hacked Sony (Bosch's first thread on this suggested they are behind it).

This is why I always use the PSN/Wii points cards you buy in the shop as you just type the code in, get the money and buy something with no credit card or personal info at all

im alright my card expired a year ago and since then ive been using the Playstation Network Cards

In a country with such a widespread culture of litigation, it’s hardly surprising that it hasn’t taken too long for the first lawsuit to be filed. We wouldn’t be surprised to see similar suits in Europe fairly soon either.

The first class action lawsuit appeared this evening – customers aren’t happy with the massive leak of crucial, personal information and are demanding compensation. Whatever happens, this won’t be easy for Sony.

As we’ve said before – be vigilant. Keep a close watch on your bank account and seriously consider taking out ID Theft protection.

The BBC’s technology correspondent, Rory Cellan-Jones, has been told ‘off the record’ by Sony that PSN users’ credit card details are ‘probably not compromised’. Sony are still investigating the full extent of the intrusion which is probably why they are erring on the side of caution and have yet to release an official statement regarding credit card information.
